As a parent with a child involved in sports, the dangers of concussions going undetected is becoming a growing concern. Unfortunately detecting a concussion is not a trivial task.  All too often athletes continue to play after sustaining concussions.  We see concussions not detected at all levels of sports from recreational leagues to Pro leagues.  Concussion sustaining blows in the NFL can be missed by trained medical staff, how can recreation league coaches be expected to make the correct call to allow children to continue to play?

There is some great research and products being created to make it easier for coaches to determine if a player has sustained a blow that is strong enough to cause a concussion.

A company out of Canada called
Safebrain Systems has developed a system that works by attaching a sensor to a hockey player helmet.  When a player sustains a hit the sensor in the helmet detects the magnitude of the force and determines if it was strong enough to cause a concussion.  If the force was above a certain level, it triggers a light to flash on the back of the helmet to warn the coach that the player needs to be evaluated.

Another company
Bite Tech has taken a different approach at detecting concussions.  Bite Tech has created a mouth piece that an athlete wears.  The mouth piece contains several sensors that sends information to a computer on the sideline and allows the coaching staff to monitor the different impacts a player may receive.  This technology is already being used by several college football teams like Stanford and Notre Dame
.

As this technology evolves, we need to push to make it part of the standard equipment for our children's recreation leagues. Way too often we allow children to continue to play without really knowing the true dangers

One of the reasons why we started ManagedSports.com was to allow clubs better visibility and control of their finances.  We are making it possible for the clubs to have the tools they need to manage the sports both from the terms of building of a team to managing the finances.  Currently we offer online registration, which enables clubs to have detailed reports on who has registered and paid at any time.  We also create a coach's pack that provides all the key player details from guardian information to key medical information.  Ultimately the sports are for the kids and we want to ensure that they have the chance to play the sports they love and enjoy. You can read the complete report at WCPO

In todays environment, if you are not on top of your email, you may be missing a lot of important information.  All day long, notifications are flying through our emails from Facebook to event cancellations.  The time where phone calls were made and voicemails were left has drifted to the wayside in turn for email and texting.

If you are someone who doesn't have a super high-tech smartphone with email and work on a computer where you can check your email constantly, you may feel left behind and out of touch.  If, like millions of other people, you do have text messaging you DO have a way to receive your emails, instantly.

Technically speaking, text messaging can be used like a simple email client and for most of us, which may be all we need.  Instead of providing your email address next time, maybe instead you could provide your phone # and the domain of your mobile carrier where emails can be sent which will in turn be sent to you as a text message1,2.

You can find a complete list of the different carriers email domains here.

1 - text messaging has basic email capabilities so don't expect to be able to read lenghtly HTML message with graphics and sound.

2 - text messaging may require additional charges for your mobile plan, please check prior to using this feature.
